How does the FileVert subtitle generator work?

Transcribe locally, export what you need.

Import video or audio

Video (MP4, WebM, MOV, MKV…) or audio alone (MP3, M4A, WAV…). One file opens the studio; several switch to batch.

Transcription runs on your device: it transcribes locally and syncs captions to every spoken word. No cloud API, no media upload.

Export the format you need

Free burned-in MP4 for social, watermark without a plan. With a plan: downloadable SRT, multi-track MKV, watermark-free export.

FAQ

FileVert local automatic subtitle generator: browser transcription, MP4, MKV, SRT, VTT.

Where are automatic subtitles generated?

Local transcription runs in your browser on your device. No video is sent to a FileVert server, and your files never train AI models. Next, edit cues and export a burned-in MP4 freely (watermark without a plan). The SRT file and multi-track MKV require a FileVert plan.

What's the difference between an online subtitling service and a local generator?

An online “automatic subtitles” service uploads your video before transcription. FileVert is a local generator: transcription runs in your browser, with no upload. Edit cues and export a burned-in MP4 freely; the SRT file, multi-track MKV, and watermark-free export require a FileVert plan.

How do I get free automatic subtitles for a video?

Import your video (MP4, WebM, MOV, MKV) and start generation. Local transcription produces a track you edit on screen, then export as burned-in MP4 freely (watermark without a plan). The SRT file and multi-track MKV require a FileVert plan.

Which video formats does the subtitle generator accept?

Common inputs: MP4, M4V, WebM, MOV, MKV, TS, AVI, WMV, FLV. The engine extracts audio and transcribes locally in the browser.

Which subtitle output formats (MKV, SRT, VTT)?

Free burned-in MP4 (ideal for social, watermark without a plan). With a FileVert plan: multi-track MKV (toggleable tracks in VLC) and downloadable SRT, plus import of extra SRT/VTT tracks, and watermark-free export.

Can I add translated subtitles after automatic transcription?

Yes. After transcription, translate externally to SRT or VTT, then import via + (FileVert plan). FileVert remuxes the MKV with all tracks.

Can I use automatic subtitles with Premiere Pro?

With a FileVert plan, download the SRT or export a multi-track MKV. Both import into Premiere Pro. For a Premiere timeline, SRT is often the most direct. Without a plan, export a burned-in MP4 (watermark).

Do automatic subtitles work for TikTok?

Export as burned-in MP4: subtitles stay visible in the video, ready for TikTok, Instagram, or YouTube Shorts (watermark without a plan). Multi-track MKV (FileVert plan) fits if you prefer toggleable tracks in a player.

Is the subtitle generator really free?

Yes for local transcription, cue editing, and burned-in MP4 export, with no signup (watermark without a plan). The SRT file, multi-track MKV, and watermark-free export require a FileVert plan. FileVert transfers beyond 2 GB too.

Is video re-encoded when adding subtitles?

No for MKV (FileVert plan): original video and audio tracks are kept; only subtitle tracks are added. For burned-in MP4, the video is re-encoded locally to burn subtitles into the picture.

Do I need to create an account?

No to transcribe, edit cues, and export a burned-in MP4 (watermark without a plan). A FileVert plan unlocks the SRT file, multi-track MKV, watermark-free export, and FileVert transfers beyond 2 GB.

How do I send a subtitled video with FileVert?

After MP4 export (or MKV with a plan), click “Transfer these files”. The recipient gets the subtitled video via a FileVert link. Beyond 2 GB, a plan is required.

Can I subtitle only a clip or excerpt?

Yes. Trim your excerpt first in the FileVert video editor (timeline or Autocut), then continue to automatic subtitles. Transcribe the clip locally and export as burned-in MP4 for TikTok, Reels or Shorts.

Can I subtitle several videos at once?

Yes, by importing multiple files: each video gets its transcription. Burned-in MP4 export for all; SRT or MKV with a FileVert plan. The preview studio opens one file at a time.

Can I transcribe an audio file without video?

Yes. Drop an audio file (MP3, M4A, WAV, FLAC, OGG): local transcription works like video. Preview and edit text freely; SRT download requires a FileVert plan. No video is generated.

Which audio formats are accepted for transcription?

MP3, M4A/AAC, WAV, FLAC, OGG/Opus. For a video (MP4, MOV, MKV...), the audio track is extracted automatically and transcribed the same way.

What's the difference between subtitling a video and transcribing audio-only?

Transcription (text) is the same. From a video: burned-in MP4 without an account; SRT and multi-track MKV with a FileVert account. From audio-only: text preview without an account, SRT download with an account.
After the tool

Send the result: standard mode or Explore mode

When your file is ready on your device, send it with FileVert Transfer from the built-in send action. Choose whether the recipient downloads immediately (standard) or previews first in the browser without a silent local copy (Explore mode).

Standard mode

Secure link: the recipient downloads the file in the usual way. Best for final deliverables, archives and heavy attachments.

Guide: send very large files

Explore mode

The recipient opens the link and previews in a dedicated in-browser view, keeping Downloads tidy until they choose to save.
